Dr. Wiggins Diet Tip of the Week
How to Burn 500 Calories a Week by Drinking Water!
It is a fact, a person can burn calories and lose weight just by changing the way they drink water!
To understand why this is so, one must have a basic knowledge of the definition of a calorie. A Calorie (Capital C) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one liter of water on degree Celsius. Now a few facts:
Water turns to ice at about zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
The normal human body temperature is about 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 Fahrenheit).
One liter of water is equal to about 33.8 ounces of water.
So, if a person drinks a glass of ice cold water,
the human body will burn Calories to raise the temperature of that water from zero degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius.
If a person follows the age-old recommendation to drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day and makes all of that water ice water, then doing the math:
One is drinking 64 ounces of ice water/ 33.8 ounces per liter = 1.9 liters of water per day
The body is burning 37 Calories for each of those 1.9 liters per day to raise the temperature of the water from zero degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius = 37 Calories x 1.9 liters or 70.3 Calories per day. Over 1 week that is 492 or approximately 500 Calories per week!
This may not seem like much, but all else being equal, that is one pound of fat every 7 weeks.
In this weekly column I will present useful dieting information and tips on how you can reach your weight loss goals. I hope to see you next week.
